UN AGENCIES INTENSIFY EBOLA RESPONSE IN EASTERN DRC

Listen

UN agencies have intensified response efforts to contain the ongoing Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), delivering medical supplies, protective equipment, and logistical support.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said peacekeeping and humanitarian teams are supporting government-led response efforts, with Ituri identified as the epicentre of the outbreak. He noted that operations are focused on key affected areas where response activities are being reinforced.

According to him, the UN mission (MONUSCO) is providing transport support, including vehicles, helicopters, and medical evacuation assistance to help reach affected communities. Other agencies, including WHO, WFP, and UNICEF, are also involved in strengthening surveillance, health services, and emergency response efforts.

The UN says the outbreak is unfolding in difficult conditions marked by insecurity, displacement, and limited humanitarian access, while efforts continue to support affected populations and contain the spread.
