The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other security personnel have rescued a 55-year-old motorist whose car collided with a moving train at the PWD Railway Line near Oshodi, Lagos State. The driver escaped without any reported injuries, although the vehicle was extensively damaged.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, October 9, saying the incident occurred as the train travelled towards Agege. The Honda car, with registration number EKY 902 JT, collided with the moving train, leaving the vehicle virtually destroyed. No casualties were recorded at the scene.
Bakare-Oki said LASTMA operatives and security personnel promptly rescued the driver and removed the wrecked vehicle from the railway track, allowing the train to continue its journey. However, traffic congestion persisted around the PWD axis, disrupting movement along the affected corridor.
The damaged vehicle was subsequently handed over to security personnel for further investigation into the cause of the collision. Bakare-Oki stressed the importance of inter-agency cooperation and prompt emergency response in managing transport incidents involving railway infrastructure.
He urged motorists and other road users to obey traffic and railway safety regulations, remain vigilant around railway crossings and designated train corridors, and never attempt to cross tracks when a train is approaching. He warned that ignoring railway safety rules could result in serious and irreversible consequences.
