Nigeria is taking a leading role in the United Nations’ budget negotiations, with its Permanent Representative to the UN, Amb. Jimoh Ibrahim, serving as Chair of the Fifth Committee of the 81st General Assembly session.
Ahead of the committee’s opening in New York, Ibrahim convened an interactive meeting with African ambassadors at Nigeria House. Representatives including ambassadors from Morocco, The Gambia and Guinea expressed support, while the meeting focused on coordination, concerns and preparations for the negotiations.
The Fifth Committee is responsible for the UN’s administrative and budgetary matters. Its main session runs from Oct. 5 to Dec. 4, with the proposed 2027 programme plan and budget among the major documents under consideration.
Ibrahim stressed the importance of timely reports, technical expertise and financial accountability as member states scrutinise spending proposals and resources needed to implement UN mandates.
