The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to seek immediate medical care when meningitis is suspected, warning that bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency.
NOA said meningitis can initially resemble malaria or flu. Warning signs include sudden high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, vomiting, sensitivity to bright light, confusion, unusual drowsiness and seizures. For babies, signs may include refusal to feed, unusual crying, stiffness or floppiness and extreme irritability.
The agency advised against self-medication and delays caused by home or herbal remedies. It also encouraged routine vaccination, good hygiene, proper ventilation and avoiding overcrowded spaces, particularly during the dry season.
Early medical attention can be important when meningitis is suspected. The agency also called for continued support for survivors and urged families and communities to avoid stigma.
