Thousands of followers of the Qadiriyya Islamic sect from across Nigeria and other parts of the world have converged on Kano for the 76th annual Maukibi, also known as the Waliyyai festival.
The annual religious procession begins at the Qadiriyya House in Kabara and continues to the Wali Maigiginya cemetery along Katsina Road. The procession is led by the leader of Qadiriyya in West Africa, Sheikh Qaribullahi Nasiru-Kabara.
The Kano Police Command said adequate security arrangements have been made for the gathering, which is attracting visitors from within and outside the country.
Police urged participants to maintain law and order and avoid activities such as carrying dangerous weapons and dealing in illicit drugs during the festival.
