Residents of five flood-ravaged communities in Lafiagi Ward 4, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, have appealed for sustained government intervention after flooding destroyed homes and property in the area.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited Pututa, Tswako, Likpata, Godangi and Ekko communities on Wednesday, September 30, to assess the damage and commiserate with affected residents. He described the situation as “bad” but expressed relief that no lives were lost.
The governor directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to assess the damage and compile an inventory of losses to guide further intervention. He also released 10 million naira to the affected communities for urgent needs, including food, medical care and potable water.
AbdulRazaq identified the dredging of the River Niger as a major long-term solution to recurring flooding in the area. He promised to continue engaging federal agencies, including the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the National Inland Waterways Authority and the Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission, for support.
