The Edo Special Criminal Court has sentenced three men and a woman to death by hanging for kidnapping and membership of a secret cult.
Justice Terry Momodu delivered the judgment in Benin on Tuesday, September 29, after more than three hours of proceedings in the case involving Marvelous Isaac, 32; Wisdom Michael, 36; Rufus Emete Michael, 30; and Gift Raphael, 27.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the four were among suspects arrested following a daylight kidnapping and robbery at the Vegetable Market, off Airport Road, Benin, on June 14. The incident prompted the establishment of special courts in the state to handle kidnapping and other serious criminal offences.
Justice Momodu said the prosecution called seven witnesses and tendered seven exhibits to establish charges including conspiracy, kidnapping, armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms and membership of a secret cult. He said CCTV footage played an important role in helping the police detect and prove the offences.
The judge commended the police for their investigation and urged residents to install CCTV cameras in homes, businesses, vehicles and public places, describing them as an important tool for crime detection and public safety.
Counsel to Raphael, Felix Imasuen, said his client would appeal the judgment. Meanwhile, Edo Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Roland Otaru (SAN), commended the judiciary, saying the judgment demonstrated the state’s commitment to enforcing the law.
