The Anambra Government says 18,389 new family planning acceptors were registered across the state between January and June 2026, as part of efforts to improve access to reproductive health services.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, disclosed this in Awka on Monday, September 28, during activities marking the 2026 World Contraception Day, themed “No Barriers, Just Choices.” Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Obiageli Uchebo, he said 73,687 clients received family planning counselling during the period, while health facilities provided 13,726 injectable contraceptives, 5,402 implants and 537 intrauterine device insertions.
Obidike said family planning could help prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce pregnancy-related complications and support women’s education, economic participation and family wellbeing. He stressed the need for respectful and confidential counselling based on accurate information and informed choice.
The Assistant Family Planning Coordinator, Mrs Chioma Okedo, identified myths, misconceptions, cultural and religious beliefs, as well as provider bias, as barriers to contraceptive uptake. She urged healthcare workers, community leaders, development partners and the media to intensify public education and correct misinformation, while a road show was held in Awka to raise awareness about family planning.
