Guinea-Bissau stunned three-time African champions Nigeria with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, dealing a major blow to the Super Eagles’ campaign.
The hosts took the lead in the 15th minute at Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro and held the advantage into half-time. Nigeria pushed for an equaliser after the break but struggled to break through, while Guinea-Bissau exploited spaces behind the defence to score twice more.
The result moved Guinea-Bissau to the top of Group L with six points, while Nigeria suffered another setback. In the other Group L match, Madagascar and Tanzania played out a 1-1 draw. Ghana also endured a difficult night, losing 4-2 at home to Gambia in Group C.
Elsewhere, Egypt defeated South Sudan 5-0 in Juba, with Omar Marmoush scoring twice, while Morocco maintained a perfect start with a 2-0 away victory. Senegal beat Ethiopia 1-0 through Ibrahim Mbaye’s early goal, Algeria drew 2-2 with Burundi, Mozambique defeated Sudan 4-1 and Comoros secured a 1-0 win over Namibia.
