The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) says it has uncovered an alleged child trafficking operation involving newborn babies in Cross River.
NAPTIP’s Head of Operations in the state, Jacob Oba, said three women in Obubura allegedly claimed to have “cryptic pregnancies” while arranging with midwives to obtain newborn babies.
According to the agency, a week-old baby girl was allegedly stolen in Akwa Ibom and sold to one of the women for ₦3 million. Investigations reportedly established that the child’s biological mother was in Akwa Ibom.
NAPTIP said the suspects were arrested on June 22 after community members stopped a vehicle carrying the women and the baby. The agency said the matter will be taken to court, with further proceedings expected in October.
