The Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) has announced plans to revive the Nigerian Open Golf Tournament in 2027, nearly three decades after the country’s premier golf event was last held.
NGF President, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), saying the tournament would hold from Nov. 16 to Nov. 20, 2027. The federation expects participation from more than 20 countries across Africa, Europe and other continents.
The Nigerian Open was held between 1969 and 1999, mainly at the Ikoyi Club in Lagos, before its final editions were hosted at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja. Runsewe said the federation had used the preparation period to reposition the sport through a new website and social media strategy, insurance policies and adoption of the World Handicap System.
He said the 2027 tournament was expected to attract between 150 and 200 golfers and would feature a 64-hole, four-day Pro-Am competition with world ranking status and an Amateur World Ranking connection. The NGF is currently in discussions with Lakowe Golf Resort in Lagos as a possible venue.
Runsewe said the federation was also working to attract sponsors and international players while creating opportunities for winners to qualify for international circuits. He added that youth development and coaching education would form key parts of the federation’s plans to strengthen the future of golf in Nigeria.
The NGF president said the federation deliberately took time to build the capacity and structures needed to deliver a sustainable tournament that meets international standards, describing the planned revival as a new chapter for Nigerian golf.
