Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged the new leadership of the ECOWAS Commission to prioritise regional unity and integration to promote development and improve the lives of people across West Africa.
Shettima made the call on Friday, September 25, in New York, United States, when he received a delegation from the ECOWAS Commission led by its new President, retired Gen. Birame Diop, on the margins of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
He urged the commission to build bridges of friendship among member states, strengthen engagement with emerging regional blocs such as the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), and promote policies that improve livelihoods. Shettima also called for stronger private-sector participation in the implementation of the Lagos-Abidjan highway project.
Diop commended Nigeria for its role in establishing and sustaining ECOWAS and its contributions to regional stability. He expressed concern over insecurity and development challenges in the sub-region, describing the commission as a tool for regional stability and seeking Nigeria’s continued support in addressing emerging challenges.
Shettima assured the new ECOWAS leadership of Nigeria’s continued cooperation and support, while Diop appealed to other member states to work with Nigeria towards inclusive development and a better future for the people of the sub-region.
