Nigeria’s Super Eagles began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
Madagascar took a shock lead in the 16th minute when E. Kari converted a pass from R. Ponti to put the visitors ahead. Nigeria responded with sustained pressure and eventually found the equaliser in first-half stoppage time through debutant George Ilenikhena, who finished a move involving Alex Iwobi.
The Super Eagles continued to push after the break and completed the comeback when another debutant, Moses Usor, scored to give Nigeria a 2-1 lead. The home side held on to secure all three points in their opening Group L fixture.
The victory gives Eric Chelle’s side an important start to their qualifying campaign, particularly in a group where Tanzania are already guaranteed a place at the finals as co-hosts. Nigeria will next travel to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
