Former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, and the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, have called for measures to prevent voter intimidation during the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference in Enugu, Onaiyekan said security agencies should provide a safe environment for voters without intimidating or harassing them. He also called for electoral reforms, including measures to strengthen INEC and ensure election disputes are resolved within a reasonable time.
Achebe, who chaired the conference, warned about the growing use of AI to create false audio, videos and images. He urged journalists and editors to strengthen fact-checking and verification ahead of the 2027 elections.
