Agronomist and Managing Director of Kanem Agro Allied Firm, Dr Makinta Abdulkadir, has urged farmers in Borno to adopt improved storage methods to reduce post-harvest losses.
He identified moisture, pests, poor handling and inadequate storage facilities as major causes of losses. Farmers were advised to properly dry grains before storage and use hermetic bags, airtight containers or improved silos to protect produce.
Abdulkadir also urged farmers to keep storage facilities clean, dry and well-ventilated, remove damaged grains before storage and avoid mixing newly harvested produce with old stocks.
He called for greater investment in affordable storage facilities and more sensitisation by agricultural extension workers and farmers’ associations to help improve post-harvest handling.
