Democratic Republic of Congo Prime Minister Judith Suminwa has warned against the growing global demand for critical minerals being linked to conflict and insecurity.
Speaking at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Suminwa said the world could not achieve a just, decarbonised economy through what she described as “blood-stained minerals.” She also called for existing peace agreements and UN resolutions on the DRC to be fully implemented.
The Prime Minister highlighted the DRC’s role in supplying minerals such as cobalt and copper, which are important to the energy transition and digital technologies. She said the country wants more processing, jobs, skills and technology to remain closer to the communities producing these resources.
