More than 4,000 athletes are taking part in the second edition of the Akwa Ibom Sports Festival, with competitions across 27 sports.
Gov. Umo Eno said the festival is part of his administration’s effort to discover grassroots talent and create more sporting opportunities for young people. He also highlighted Akwa Ibom’s performance at the 2025 NDDC Games, where the state won 16 gold, 17 silver and 22 bronze medals.
The state’s weightlifting team was also recognised for emerging African champions in Egypt and qualifying to represent Nigeria at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Sports Commissioner Paul Bassey said changes have been made to registration and eligibility rules ahead of the 2026 edition.
The festival brings athletes from the state’s 31 local government areas together to compete, develop their talents and promote sportsmanship.
