The Enugu State Police Command has detained a 30-year-old man, Emmanuel Okpara, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, identified as Chinyere, in the state.
Police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said Okpara was rescued from an angry mob at Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, on Sept. 21, after residents reportedly discovered the remains of the woman in his apartment. The victim’s surname, age and address had yet to be established.
According to the police, preliminary investigations indicated that the incident allegedly followed an argument over HIV infection between the suspect and the deceased. Police said Okpara allegedly struck her with a pestle, after which he concealed her remains inside the toilet of the apartment.
The remains were recovered and deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to identify and contact the victim’s relatives. Police said the suspect allegedly confessed during preliminary interrogation.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the suspect is prosecuted if the allegations are established. The police also advised members of the public to exercise caution and keep trusted relatives or friends informed about their whereabouts.
