Legendary Nigerian jùjú musician, Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade (KSA), has been celebrated by fans, colleagues and public figures as he marks his 80th birthday.
Born on Sept. 22, 1946, in Ondo State, King Sunny Ade began his musical career with Moses Olaiya’s Federal Rhythm Dandies before forming the Green Spots in 1967. The band later became African Beats as he developed the distinctive sound that established him as one of Nigeria’s most influential jùjú musicians.
KSA gained international recognition in the 1980s after signing with Island Records and releasing albums including Juju Music and Synchro System. The latter earned him a Grammy nomination in 1984, making him the first Nigerian to receive a Grammy nomination, while his 1998 album Odu also received a Grammy nomination.
President Bola Tinubu, in a personally signed tribute, described Sunny Ade as an icon of Nigerian and African music and praised his contribution to cultural diplomacy. The President said his innovative blend of guitars, talking drums and traditional instruments had transformed jùjú music into a globally recognised Nigerian cultural treasure.
Fans and fellow musicians also flooded social media with birthday messages celebrating the veteran artiste’s more than six decades in music. He has received numerous honours, including the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), and was inducted into the Hard Rock Café Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Headies Hall of Fame in 2021.
