The Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking says it has arrested more than 380 suspects and secured over 230 convictions since it was inaugurated on July 22.
The task force also says 43 underage children were rescued after being exposed to intoxicants while involved in street scavenging. Chairman Muhuyi Rimin-Gado said the children have undergone medical examinations and are receiving counselling and treatment, while efforts are ongoing to reunite them with their families.
Rimin-Gado also disclosed that about 870,000 Pregabalin capsules were seized from a pharmaceutical company over alleged diversion for illicit use. He said 125 people had been referred to the Kano Reformatory Institute in Kiru for rehabilitation, with an additional facility provided in Tofa Local Government Area.
The task force says it aims to remove 10,000 youths from the streets, provide rehabilitation and skills training, and support their reintegration into society. It also called for stronger cooperation among security agencies, community leaders, religious institutions, civil society organisations and the public.
