The Federal Ministry of Education and labour unions have reached a five-point agreement aimed at resolving the dispute over the proposed management arrangement involving King’s College, Lagos.
The agreement was reached in Abuja, on Wednesday September 16, at a meeting involving the Ministers of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa and Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, and representatives of the Joint Workers Union and Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN). Under the deal, the unions are expected to suspend the ongoing industrial action over concerns about the proposed arrangement.
The ministry also agreed that no worker would be victimised or punished for participating in the industrial action, while implementation of the proposed takeover of the college by its old students would be paused for two weeks. Policemen would also be redeployed from the school premises to create a conducive atmosphere for further discussions.
The parties further agreed to establish a seven-member committee to review and negotiate the Federal Government’s agreement with the King’s College Old Boys Association (KCOBA). The committee will examine the unions’ concerns and other issues surrounding the proposed arrangement as part of efforts to resolve the dispute through dialogue.
