Erosion, flooding, and expanding gullies are threatening homes, roads, infrastructure, farmlands and livelihoods across parts of Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger states, with residents calling for urgent and sustained government action.
In Kogi, residents of Idah and Egbe said erosion had destroyed roads, fences and buildings, with some families forced to abandon their homes. They called for proper drainage and stronger Erosion preventive measures. The state Government on its part said it was presently implementing erosion-control projects and other related interventions.
In Nasarawa, the government said it had awarded a 10 billion naira erosion-control contract covering Lafia, Doma and Toto, including drainage construction, gully stabilisation and rehabilitation of degraded land. Officials said compensation had also been paid to affected residents in Lafia/Doma and Toto.
In Niger, the collapse of the Yinti Bridge in Katcha LGA has disrupted access between farming communities and markets, raising concerns over the movement of agricultural produce. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency said it was strengthening hazard assessment, public sensitisation, prevention and mitigation efforts to reduce erosion and other disaster risks.
