FLOOD ALERT: NIGER GOVT WARNS KADUNA RIVER COMMUNITIES OVER SHIRORO DAM RELEASE

Listen

The Niger Government has warned residents and communities along the Kaduna River Basin to prepare for possible rising water levels following sustained inflows into the Shiroro Reservoir during the ongoing rainy season.

The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Obed Nana, said a controlled release of water from the reservoir could become necessary in September to safeguard the Shiroro Dam and downstream communities. He said the alert followed a notification from North South Power Company Ltd., operators of the Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Plant.

Nana urged residents in flood-prone areas, particularly farmers cultivating along the River Kaduna floodplain, fishermen and boat operators, to exercise caution and remain vigilant. Community leaders were also asked to promptly share the advisory with residents.

The commissioner stressed that the public should not panic but take necessary precautions to protect lives and property. He assured residents that the state government and relevant agencies would continue to monitor the situation and issue further updates.
