The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has trained 100 youths in Onitsha, Anambra, in modern electrical installation and maintenance methods under its Sustainable Empowerment Programme.
Speaking on Friday September 11, at the closing ceremony of the five-day training, NASENI Chief Executive Officer, Mr Khalil Halilu, said the beneficiaries also received starter packs containing electrical tools and equipment to support their livelihoods.
Halilu said the intervention also included NASENI solar home systems, clean cookstoves and support packs. He explained that the solar systems would provide reliable renewable energy for household activities and small businesses, while the cookstoves would reduce fuel consumption and exposure to harmful smoke.
The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, commended the initiative, saying it would help keep unemployed youths off the streets. The state Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Patrick Aghamba, also urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the skills and equipment provided.
Dr Rita Melifonwu of the Onitsha Advancement Foundation said the beneficiaries were selected from more than 100 applicants. She said 56 participants were electricians, 27 were electrical engineering students and five were women, while 17 were non-indigenes of Onitsha.
