The Federal Capital Territory Administration has inaugurated a task force under the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) to coordinate efforts aimed at reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths across communities.
FCT Mandate Secretary Dr Dolapo Fasawe said the task force will oversee interventions involving pregnant women, health facilities, communities, traditional leaders and transport workers involved in the emergency movement of pregnant women requiring urgent care.
MAMII National Coordinator Dr Dayo Adeyanju said the FCT is the 34th state to join the initiative. He said field assessments identified delays in accessing care, transportation challenges, financial constraints, socio-cultural barriers and inadequate awareness as factors contributing to maternal and newborn health challenges.
Officials encouraged pregnant women to complete antenatal care and deliver in appropriate health facilities. The new task force is expected to coordinate practical interventions aimed at improving access to care and supporting better maternal and newborn health outcomes across the FCT.
