The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has arrested and repatriated a suspected drug kingpin who had allegedly evaded arrest for more than two years.
The agency said the 52-year-old suspect was among three people declared wanted after NDLEA operatives intercepted 49.70kg of heroin at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, in February 2024. The drugs were allegedly concealed in cartons of metal-cutting machines.
According to the NDLEA, the operation also led to the arrest of other members of the alleged syndicate, the freezing of 107 bank accounts and the forfeiture of properties linked to the cartel.
The suspect was arrested at the airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on Sept. 2 following intelligence and cooperation involving INTERPOL authorities in both countries. He was subsequently brought to Nigeria to answer questions over his alleged role in the trafficking network.
