The Benue State Police Command has confirmed that the convoy of Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, was on Tuesday, September 8 blocked by youths in Makurdi while he was on his way to Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, said the command had provided security for Obi’s visit, which was intended to allow him commiserate with communities affected by the deadly June 13, 2025 attack. He said police were informed that the visit was not for political campaigning.
Nwadiogbu said police received information upon Obi’s arrival that some youths had blocked the road and prevented him from proceeding to Yelwata. Although the situation was managed and Obi later left the state, the commissioner said the command had commenced an investigation to determine why the blockade occurred and whether any damage was recorded.
The police commissioner stressed that every citizen has the right to freedom of movement and promised that the findings of the investigation would be made public. The June 2025 attack on Yelwata claimed more than 200 lives and displaced residents, drawing widespread condemnation and renewed calls for improved security in Benue.
