Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan says some filmmakers could leave YouTube as a distribution platform if the naira strengthens significantly against the U.S. dollar.
Afolayan made the comment during an interview on the Nidacity Podcast while discussing the increasing migration of Nollywood producers to digital platforms. He said the financial returns from YouTube, particularly when dollar earnings are converted to naira, are a major attraction for filmmakers.
The filmmaker described YouTube as flexible and accessible, especially for producers who may not have the resources or bargaining power to secure deals with major streaming platforms. However, he said Netflix and Prime Video provide better opportunities for filmmakers.
His comments highlight the role of exchange rates and digital distribution in shaping how Nollywood producers choose platforms for their films.
