Nigeria is expanding kidney transplant capacity as concerns over illegal organ trafficking and limited access to affordable treatment continue to draw attention.
Analysis highlights the difference between ethical organ donation and illegal organ trading, where vulnerable people may be exposed to exploitation. Nigeria’s National Health Act 2014 prohibits the commercialisation of human organs and restricts transplants to authorised hospitals and registered medical practitioners.
The analysis also points to efforts to strengthen transplant services, including capacity building at FMC Abuja and Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Zaria, alongside funding support for indigent patients in Borno State.
Health stakeholders say stronger donor-consent checks, better coordination among relevant agencies, financial monitoring and improved access to legitimate transplant care will be important in tackling organ trafficking.
