The rising price of beans is causing concern among traders and consumers in Lagos, with some now looking for alternatives to the staple food.
A cup of beans that sold for about ₦800 in early April rose to between ₦1,200 and ₦1,300 in August. Some consumers have responded by reducing how often they eat beans or replacing it with other foods and protein sources.
For traders who depend on beans, the increase is also affecting their businesses. An akara seller said she may switch to frying potatoes and yam if the price continues to rise.
While some consumers have reduced their consumption, others say they will continue buying beans but only according to what they can afford.
