Nigeria’s Falconets began their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign on a disappointing note after losing 2-0 to Spain in their opening Group F match on Monday, September 7, at the Arena Sosnowiec in Poland.
Spain took control early and opened the scoring in the 13th minute through Marisa Garcia. Nigeria struggled to create clear opportunities against the Spanish defence and went into the break trailing by a goal.
The European side continued to dominate after the restart before Alba Cerrato doubled Spain’s advantage in the 72nd minute. The Falconets could not find a response as Spain secured all three points.
The result leaves Nigeria third in Group F, behind leaders China PR, who defeated New Caledonia 5-0, and Spain. The Falconets will face China PR on Thursday at 5 p.m. before meeting New Caledonia on Sunday at 2 p.m. Nigeria, two-time runners-up in the competition, will be seeking a strong response in their remaining group matches.
