The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed four officers over the fatal shooting of a student, Anthony Obodo, in Port Harcourt, following an altercation between the victim and a police officer on August 27.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, said the officers were tried through orderly room proceedings and found culpable in the incident. He said they would subsequently be charged to court to face appropriate criminal charges.
According to the commissioner, the incident began when a patrol team from Agip Police Division attempted to stop a fully tinted Lexus vehicle that allegedly sped away. During the ensuing chase, one of the officers opened fire, hitting Obodo, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Adepoju identified the officers as ASP Fabian Kpeanabari, Insp. Solomon Nworgu, CPL Alfred Louise and PC Michael Ejokwu, adding that efforts were ongoing to locate Nworgu, who reportedly absconded after the incident. He said the action demonstrated the command’s commitment to holding personnel accountable and assured Obodo’s family that justice would be served.
