The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported 14 new confirmed Lassa fever cases, bringing the total number of infections recorded so far in 2026 to 1,035.
The cases were recorded between August 10 and 16 in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo and Benue states, according to a situation report made available on Tuesday September 1. The agency said cumulative deaths have risen to 252, pushing the case fatality rate to 24.4 per cent, compared with 18.6 per cent recorded in 2025.
By week 33, 23 states had reported at least one confirmed case across 117 Local Government Areas. Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue and Edo accounted for 87 per cent of all confirmed cases, with people aged 21 to 30 remaining the most affected age group.
The NCDC said no new Lassa fever infection was recorded among healthcare workers during the reporting period. It added that surveillance and response efforts would continue as the disease remains a significant public health concern in affected states.
