The BRICON Foundation has donated 600 breast prostheses and 300 mastectomy bras to breast cancer survivors at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), as part of activities marking its 10th anniversary.
The foundation’s Co-Founder, Abigail Simon-Hart, who is also a breast cancer survivor, said the intervention was designed to help women rebuild their confidence and quality of life after breast removal surgery. She stressed that cancer survivors need continued support beyond treatment, including counselling, economic empowerment and assistance with rebuilding their livelihoods.
Co-Founder Niyi Adekeye said the donation was made in partnership with SMALLS for All, which provided the bras and prostheses valued at N50 million. He called for greater government intervention, awareness, education and subsidies to make cancer care more accessible, while emphasising the importance of prevention and early detection.
Lagos State officials and LASUTH management commended the foundation for its support, with the hospital disclosing plans to expand cancer-care services, including the introduction of radiotherapy. One beneficiary, Lateefat Atunbi, said the donation was significant because the cost of mastectomy bras and prostheses had previously been difficult for her to afford.
