The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued new emergency guidance limiting the use of the licensed Ervebo vaccine during outbreaks of Bundibugyo virus disease to approved research protocols.
The decision followed an extraordinary meeting of WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunisation on August 19, 2026. The organisation said Ervebo should currently be used only through research, including ring vaccination trials or observational studies, to determine its effectiveness against the virus.
WHO said broader use before sufficient evidence is available would require a comprehensive risk-mitigation plan, reliable vaccination records and close monitoring of recipients. It added that research findings could help shape future vaccine policies and recommendations.
The organisation also called for faster development and rigorous evaluation of vaccines specifically targeting Bundibugyo virus disease, as well as post-exposure treatments and other countermeasures. WHO urged stronger coordination among partners supporting affected countries to ensure consistent research and rapid sharing of evidence.
