The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf, popularly known as Talban Wushishi, has died at the age of 66 after a brief illness.
Yusuf died in Abuja on Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, less than nine months after he was sworn in by President Bola Tinubu as the eighth substantive chairman of the commission. His death was announced in a statement by the NPC Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Adelayo Serifat Olurode.
During his tenure, Yusuf introduced a Seven-Point Agenda aimed at repositioning the commission and strengthening its capacity to provide reliable demographic data for national planning and development. The NPC described him as a dedicated patriot, astute administrator and compassionate leader committed to national service.
Born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State, Yusuf had a long public service career that included serving as Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area, Member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly, NAFDAC board member and Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Niger State Governor. The NPC described his death as a significant loss to Nigeria and prayed for the repose of his soul and strength for his family.
