President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of veteran journalist Dotun Oladipo, former Political Editor of The Punch and Publisher of The Eagle Online, describing his death at 56 as a painful loss to Nigeria’s media industry.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, in Abuja, Tinubu commended Oladipo’s years of dedicated service to journalism, particularly his work in political reporting and his commitment to providing credible information to Nigerians through traditional and digital media.
The President said Oladipo’s career reflected the vital role of journalism in strengthening democracy by keeping citizens informed, holding public officials accountable and promoting informed public debate. He also praised his contribution to the growth of Nigeria’s digital media through The Eagle Online, which he founded after his career at The Punch.
Tinubu described the late journalist as a committed professional whose contributions to political journalism and the digital media space would not be forgotten. He extended condolences to Oladipo’s family, colleagues in the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) and friends.
The President prayed for the peaceful repose of Oladipo’s soul and strength for his loved ones to bear the loss. Oladipo reportedly died on Tuesday after he suddenly took ill in his office in Lagos.
