The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is intensifying enforcement against illegal dumping as refuse continues to reappear at locations previously cleared across the state.
In its latest operation in Ayobo-Ipaja, LAWMA impounded two tricycles allegedly used to transport refuse to unauthorised dumping points and evacuated waste from road medians around Megida. The agency said illegal trading activities were contributing to the recurrence of dumping hotspots.
However, some residents said irregular waste collection was worsening the problem, forcing them to rely on informal waste collectors. LAWMA acknowledged complaints about service backlogs, while the state government said it was upgrading waste infrastructure, including transfer loading stations and material recovery facilities.
Environmentalists have called for greater attention to household waste collection, including the formal integration of waste pickers into the collection system. LAWMA says its strategy combines enforcement, infrastructure development and behavioural change to achieve lasting improvements in waste management across Lagos.
