Visual artist Timileyin Faseyi has used the metaphor of a playground to explore the complexities of human existence, encouraging people to embrace gratitude and overcome distractions that affect their well-being.
Faseyi made the remarks at the opening of his first solo exhibition, “Isn’t Life a Playground?”, held on Saturday at Didi Museum, Victoria Island, Lagos. He said the exhibition presents life as a space of joy and excitement, but also of conflict, competition and challenges.
According to the artist, the works draw from personal experiences, observations and conversations with friends while examining political, social and spiritual aspects of human well-being. He said the themes of gratitude and the seven deadly sins were deliberately contrasted to encourage viewers to reflect on how their choices shape their experiences.
Faseyi explained that gratitude helps people appreciate both major achievements and seemingly small aspects of life, while the seven deadly sins represent distractions that can prevent people from living fully. He also described art as therapeutic, saying he hoped his works would eventually be displayed in hospitals, homes and other public spaces.
The artist identified limited resources and exhibition opportunities as challenges facing emerging creatives, but urged young artists to begin their journeys despite such limitations, saying taking the first step could attract support and create valuable industry connections.
