ENGINEERING KEY TO NIGERIA’S SECURITY, DEVELOPMENT — NSE

Listen

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Ibadan Branch, has urged engineers to drive innovation that will strengthen national security, protect critical infrastructure and support sustainable development across Nigeria.

The Chairman of the branch, Mr Ayokunnu Ojedele, made the call while unveiling activities for the 2026 Engineering Week in Ibadan. Themed “Engineering Innovation for National Security, Critical Infrastructure Protection and Sustainable Development in Nigeria,” the week will focus on addressing major developmental and security challenges.

Ojedele said the branch was placing strong emphasis on young engineers through a Young Engineers Programme designed to prepare them for emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, Industry 4.0, smart infrastructure and renewable energy.

He also called for stronger links between universities and industry, saying young engineers should gain practical experience, pursue continuous professional development, seek mentorship and develop entrepreneurial skills. He stressed that Nigeria needed engineers capable of creating solutions rather than simply seeking employment.

Activities for the week include a symposium and exhibition, technical visits to critical road projects, induction of new members, an Annual General Meeting and election of executives, as well as a dinner and awards ceremony. A courtesy visit to the Olubadan, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, and discussions on engineering practice in the era of AI and digital transformation are also scheduled.
