MainPower Electricity Distribution Ltd. (MEDL) has confirmed the death of an operations staff member, Mr Samson Okechi, following an electrical accident in Eke, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Okechi, a Team Lead attached to the company’s 9th Mile District, was reportedly carrying out maintenance work on a 50kVA/11kV pole-mounted distribution substation on Aug. 13 when he sustained an electric shock. He was taken to Our Saviour Hospital, Ngwo, where he was pronounced dead.
MEDL’s Head of Communications, Mr Emeka Ezeh, said the incident was reported to the police for documentation and other statutory procedures. He also dismissed social media claims that the worker was murdered or that sabotage was responsible for the incident.
Ezeh said Okechi had obtained a Station Guarantee for the Okwe 11kV Feeder before commencing the maintenance operation, with the feeder subsequently opened and tagged in line with safety procedures.
The company has commenced a comprehensive investigation to determine the immediate, underlying and root causes of the accident. MEDL said the findings would guide corrective measures and help strengthen its operational safety procedures and controls.
