CUSTOMS HANDS OVER 373.8 MILLION NAIRA CANNABIS-INFUSED PRODUCTS TO NDLEA

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over seized cannabis-infused products worth an estimated N373.8 million to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Dr Bashir Adeniyi, said the seized consignment, intercepted at Tin Can Island Port in Lagos, contained Delta-8-infused cannabis cookies, gummies and pre-rolls concealed in two 40-foot containers.

Adeniyi said the seizure demonstrated the service’s commitment to preventing prohibited substances from entering Nigeria. He credited intelligence sharing and technology-assisted risk assessment for helping officers identify the suspicious containers.

The NDLEA, represented by Commander Augustine Adewunmi, raised concerns over cannabis-infused products allegedly being packaged as ordinary snacks and drinks. He urged parents, schools and other stakeholders to remain vigilant, particularly over products that could be targeted at young people.

Customs said the seized items would remain under NDLEA custody for investigation, after which the agencies are expected to participate in a public destruction exercise. The service also urged port users and stakeholders to support efforts to combat drug trafficking and protect public health.
