The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man, Jacob Irewa, for allegedly attempting to set his wife, Mrs Berida Irawo, ablaze during a domestic dispute in Lokoja.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, Aug. 14, at Oworo Estate, Felele. The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, said the victim sustained injuries and is receiving treatment at a hospital.

Saliu said police operatives from the B Division Surveillance Team responded to a distress call and arrested the suspect at the scene. She added that preliminary investigations indicated that an argument between the couple escalated before the suspect allegedly used petrol to set his wife on fire.

The suspect reportedly admitted to the act in his statement to police. Authorities said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and gather further evidence.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, condemned the alleged attack and warned against domestic violence, urging residents to resolve disputes through lawful means. Police said the suspect would be charged with attempted culpable homicide after investigations are concluded.
