Nigeria finished fourth at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, winning one gold, five silver and 18 bronze medals.
The week-long competition, held at Rugby School Nigeria, Eko Atlantic, attracted athletes and officials from 20 countries. Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson made history by winning Nigeria’s first gold medal at the championships.
India dominated the medal table with 25 gold, 20 silver and 18 bronze medals, followed by England with three gold, two silver and nine bronze, while Wales placed third with two gold, one silver and three bronze medals. Nigeria, however, recorded the second-highest overall medal tally with 24 medals.
President of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, described the successful hosting of the championships as a major achievement, saying preparations had lasted more than a year. He also highlighted the wheelchair fencing academy organised ahead of the competition as an important step towards developing the sport in Nigeria and Africa.
Samuel, who also won a silver medal in the veteran sabre event after returning to competitive fencing, thanked participating countries, officials, sponsors, volunteers, the media and other stakeholders for their contributions to the event.
He said his administration would focus on developing fencing across the Commonwealth, strengthening cooperation among member countries and ensuring greater participation in the sport.
