Nigeria’s U-18 Beach Volleyball coach, John Iwerima, has praised Joy Lawrence and Ifechukwu Odoh after the duo won the U-18 Beach Volleyball Championship in Saly, Senegal.
The Nigerian pair defeated hosts Senegal 2-0 in Thursday’s final, dominating the opening set 21-8 before maintaining their composure to win the second set 21-10 and secure the title.
Iwerima, speaking after the players arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, commended their resilience, determination and fighting spirit. He said the victory demonstrated the strength of Nigeria’s grassroots and youth volleyball development programmes.
President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, Musa Nimrod, also congratulated the players, describing their success as an indication of a bright future for beach volleyball in Nigeria.
Nimrod said the federation would continue investing in underage competitions to develop a strong pool of players capable of strengthening Nigeria’s senior women’s teams and competing successfully at international events.
The latest triumph is expected to boost interest in beach volleyball among young Nigerians and further strengthen the country’s position in the sport on the African continent.
