The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has described Delta State’s technology-driven teacher attendance system, Attend360, as an innovation that could strengthen accountability and improve learning outcomes across Nigeria.
UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, said this during a visit to the Delta State Government in Asaba as part of activities marking the commission’s 30th quarterly meeting with chairmen of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs). She said technology could help address teacher absenteeism and ensure that educators were present and actively engaged in classrooms.
Garba commended Delta for its use of technology in school management and teacher monitoring, as well as its access to UBE matching grants. She, however, urged the state to fully utilise available education funds and implement approved programmes so that investments would translate into better facilities, teaching and learning outcomes.
The UBEC boss also encouraged Delta to position itself to benefit from the World Bank-supported HOPE Education Programme, which has up to $500 million earmarked for education. Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme said the state had implemented about 90 per cent of its 2025 Action Plan and had received its 2026 matching grant.
Garba also stressed the importance of collaboration among government, traditional institutions and other stakeholders to ensure every Nigerian child has access to quality basic education. The Asagba of Asaba, HRM Prof. Epiphany Azinge, said quality teachers remained central to producing quality graduates and urged education authorities to ensure that no child, including those with disabilities and from disadvantaged backgrounds, was left behind.
