The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) says it has installed more than 3,000 free prepaid meters in the Gbaji and Apa communities of Badagry over the past six months as part of efforts to improve electricity service and reduce estimated billing.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Badagry, EKEDC said the meters were deployed through the Federal Government’s free metering programme and the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme. The company assured residents that more customers would be metered as additional units become available, stressing that widespread metering benefits both consumers and the distribution company.
EKEDC attributed the area’s persistent power outages to limited electricity allocation from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), noting that Badagry currently receives less power than required. The company expressed optimism that supply would improve when the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) in Oloko is completed.
Residents, however, called for faster meter deployment, improved power supply and an end to estimated billing, with some complaining of paying between ₦25,000 and ₦35,000 monthly despite receiving only a few hours of electricity each day. EKEDC encouraged customers to report unresolved complaints through its customer service channels for prompt attention.
