Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has joined the unveiling of “Statues Also Breathe,” a powerful exhibition in Marrakech, Morocco, honouring the Chibok schoolgirls who remain missing more than a decade after their abduction. Chibok survivors, including Rahab Ibrahim and Margaret Yama, as well as family members, attended the opening, which renewed calls for the safe return of those still unaccounted for.
The exhibition, currently on display at the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL), was created by French artist Prune Nourry in collaboration with Nigerian musician and activist Ade Bantu. It features 108 clay sculptures inspired by the iconic Ife bronze heads, blending Nigeria’s rich artistic heritage with a message of remembrance, justice and hope.
Organisers said the project preserves the memories of the missing girls, amplifies the voices of their families and encourages continued global conversations on human rights. The exhibition, which premiered in Lagos before moving to Morocco, is expected to tour other locations before finding a permanent home in an African museum.
Jolie’s participation has drawn renewed international attention to the Chibok story, highlighting the enduring impact of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. While many of the abducted girls have regained their freedom since the 2014 attack, others remain missing, making the exhibition both a tribute to their resilience and a reminder that the search for the remaining girls continues.
