The Lagos State Government has called on residents to adopt proper waste disposal practices, stressing that environmental sanitation is a shared responsibility. The appeal came during a community cleanup exercise in Badagry, where officials encouraged greater public participation in keeping communities clean.
Special Adviser to the Ministry of the Environment, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, commended residents, community groups and students for taking part in the exercise. He said involving young people is key to changing poor waste disposal habits and building a lasting culture of environmental responsibility.
Rotimi-Akodu attributed indiscriminate dumping of refuse to poor waste management practices and urged residents to patronise approved Private Sector Participants (PSP) operators. He also assured the community that the ministry would investigate complaints about inadequate PSP services and address operational shortcomings.
Badagry Local Government Chairman, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, appealed for more PSP operators to be deployed to the area, noting that existing operators are insufficient to meet growing waste management needs. He said the council would continue sanitation campaigns, waste evacuation and public awareness efforts to maintain a cleaner environment.
