The Lagos State Police Command has arrested six Liberian nationals over an alleged human trafficking and international visa scam that reportedly lured victims with false promises of relocation to Canada and the United Kingdom.
The suspects, made up of five men and one woman, were apprehended in the Gberigbe area of Ikorodu after one of the victims alerted authorities. Police said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Tijani, for further investigation.
According to police sources, the syndicate allegedly invited victims from Liberia to Nigeria with promises of visas, work permits and residency documents. On arrival, their passports were reportedly seized, and they were allegedly pressured to recruit others into the scheme instead of being processed for overseas travel.
Investigators said one victim managed to share her location with a contact she met during her journey to Nigeria, leading to her rescue and the arrest of the suspects. Police said efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the network, while the six suspects are expected to be charged after investigations are concluded.
